Facelift
- (Rhytidectomy)
Many factors contribute to aging of the skin. Facial expression,
the natural aging process as well as environmental factors
all contribute to the formation of wrinkles and loss of
elasticity in the skin. As we age the formation of jowls,
sagging skin in the neck, and loss of definition in the
jaw line become evident.
A facelift procedure is designed to target the lower portion
of your face. A facelift will provide an overall lift to
the lower third of your face by tightening loose sagging
tissue in the jowls, neck and jaw line.
During your initial consultation, Facial Surgery & Cosmetic Centre of Ottawa will discuss
your particular condition, your expectations and the probable
outcome of the surgery.
The Surgery
The facelift procedure is performed on a outpatient basis
in our private surgical centre or in an outpatient surgical
facility. Facelift surgery will take between 2 to 4 hours
depending on the extent of the surgery. General anesthesia
or twilight anesthesia with sedation is usually given to
the patient immediately prior to surgery. Incisions are
placed in the natural crease of the facial skin and begins
inside the hairline, in the temple area above and forward
of the ear. It continues in the natural folds around the
ear and the earlobe and behind the ear. The skin is lifted
outward and Facial Surgery & Cosmetic Centre of Ottawa tightens and repositions the underlying
muscles and tissues. Excess skin and fat may be removed.
Recovering from a facelift is a gradual process. Bandages
are removed 1 or 2 days after surgery after which you can
wash your hair. Pain is usually minimal and can be controlled
with oral medication. Bruising and swelling may persist
for 7 to 14 days. Sutures are removed after 7 to 10 days,
depending on the patient. In two weeks you will feel more
comfortable and make up may be applied. Exposure to direct
sun should be avoided for several weeks.
