Basic skincare facts
• The skin literally holds us together
• The skin is the body’s largest, most exposed organ
• Its most amazing quality is its ability to stretch
• We enjoy the skin’s elastic properties which allow
us to grow and change
• We often disregard our ‘protective shield’,
putting it through much wear and tear over the years
Basic skincare facts
• As the skin ages, the sebaceous glands become less active
with the number of blood vessels decreases
• A lifetime of poor habits, including sun exposure and repeated
muscle contractions such as frowning and squinting, can all add
years to the complexion
Daily Skin care
• We offer a full line of daily skin care products, including
• Vivier Vitamin-C serums
• SkinCeuticals
• Obagi-Nuderm line
The aging process
• As we age, skin cells divide more slowly and the inner skin
(dermis) starts to thin
• Fat cells beneath the dermis weaken, whilst the underlying
network of collagen and elastin fibres loosen and unravel causing
loss of elasticity
• As we age the skin also loses its ability to retain moisture
and repair itself
• Frown lines and crow’s feet appear to develop because
of persistent small muscle contractions
• Habitual facial expressions also form character lines, contributing
to the formation of jowls and drooping eyelids
Sun damage (photoaging)
• The skin can also age prematurely as a result of prolonged
exposure to UV radiation emanating from the sun
• The sun is the most significant cause of aging skin and
skin cancers
• Exposure to UV radiation from sunlight accounts for approximately
90% of the symptoms of premature aging
• Most effects occur by age 20
How wrinkles form
• Movement of brow muscles cause the skin to crease
• As skin becomes less elastic over time, repeated frowning
creates visible lines and wrinkles
Preventing wrinkles
• Avoid intense exposure to sunlight
• Use sunscreens and sunblocks
• Wear protective sunglasses and clothing
• Adopt a healthy lifestyle – daily exercise coupled
with a diet rich in grains, fresh fruits and vegetables
• Ensure daily preventative skincare
• Consider cosmetic rejuvenation techniques, including injectables,
fillers, chemical peels, and topical creams
The face in our 20s
• Abundant and healthy
• Collagen and elastin tissue supports the skin
• Expression lines:
– dynamic only
– static: few or none which are still reversible at this stage
• Skin aging lines:
– under eyes is the earliest site
The face in our 30s
• Collagen and elastin tissue starts to decrease and weaken
• Skin texture begins to suffer
• Expression lines:
– dynamic: deeper
– static: more noticeable, still partly reversible
• Skin aging lines:
– increases in number and depth
• Skin sagginess:
– usually around the lower face by mid-late 30s
The face in our 40s
• Skin becomes coarser, age spots and pigmentation appear
• Expression lines:
– dynamic: heavier, superimposed upon
– static: deeper
• Skin aging lines:
– increases in number and depth
• Skin sagginess:
– increases
The face in our 50s
• Skin becomes even coarser, more age spots and pigmentation
appear
Searching for the ‘fountain of youth’
Interesting facts
• 95% of Canadians surveyed are confident in how they look
– the highest confidence level among the five countries being
polled (other countries included the US, France, Australia and Brazil)
• 80% of Canadians consider physical attractiveness somewhat
to very important in today’s society
Searching for the ‘fountain of youth’
• When asked about their facial appearance, 67% of Canadians
want their face to look young for their age. Also, 35% of Canadians
agree that there are things about their face that they would like
to change.
• 78% of women under 45 consider using various treatments
and procedures to improve their appearance.
• 63% of Canadians would go to their doctors (dermatologists,
plastic surgeons or family/general physicians) as their main source
of information about facial treatments or procedures
Searching for the ‘fountain of youth’
• Our quest for not only the ‘fountain of youth’
but ways to enhance our appearance has led to an increase in medical
research and a boom in the cosmetic industry over the past decade
• Interest in various cosmetic treatments and procedures has
surged, however, the vast majority of Canadians are happy with the
way they look
• Women and men are looking for simple treatments and procedures
that don’t take too much time and merely improve appearance,
making them look and feel better
• Simple, quick and non-surgical cosmetic techniques that
are relatively pain-free and involve minimal recovery time are becoming
increasingly popular
What is BOTOX Cosmetic® ?
• BOTOX Cosmetic® is a natural purified protein that relaxes
wrinkle-causing muscles creating a smoother, rejuvenated and more
youthful appearance
• A simple and quick, minimally invasive non-surgical treatment
that delivers great natural-looking results

a proven 10-year safety record and history of effective use in hundreds
of thousands of patients worldwide
The BOTOX Cosmetic® boom
• BOTOX Cosmetic® is now the most common cosmetic procedure
performed in the US
• More than 1.6 million procedures were performed in the US
in 2002
What is BOTOX Cosmetic® treatment like?
• BOTOX Cosmetic® is administered through a few tiny injections:
It relaxes the muscle by blocking nerve impulses that trigger wrinkle-causing
muscle contractions
• Discomfort is minimal - often described as a small insect
sting that lasts for a few seconds
• You can resume normal activities immediately
• It takes effect after 2-3 days, with full effect seen 7-10
days post treatment
Is BOTOX Cosmetic® safe?
• Yes! BOTOX Cosmetic® has a proven and established safety
profile
• It is the only product of its type with more than 10 years
of successful therapeutic application in clinical conditions
• BOTOX Cosmetic® is approved in 70 countries and has
been safely used in the treatment of a broad range medical conditions
such as cerebral palsy in children, post-stroke related spasticity,
and excessive sweating
BOTOX Cosmetic® treats dynamic wrinkles
What can I expect from a BOTOX Cosmetic® treatment?
• A natural effect
• Lasts 3-5 months, possibly longer depending on individual
• Repeated as you wish
• Results may last longer with repeated treatments
• Results will wear off progressively - not suddenly
• Eventually wrinkles will return and appear as they did before
treatment
What are the potential side effects?
• There have been no long-term side effects of BOTOX Cosmetic®
reported after 10 years of cosmetic use
• Most common side effect is tenderness or bruising at the
injection site
• Less frequent side effects include headache, temporary eyelid
droop and nausea
What is Restylane® ?
• Restylane® is a non-animal stabilised hyaluronic acid
which is a natural compound
• In Restylane® , hyaluronic acid in the form of a crystal-clear
gel smooths wrinkles and folds or gives contour
• When injected into the skin, Restylane® works with the
body’s own hyaluronic acid to create the volume needed to
lift lines and smooth wrinkles
What is Restylane® treatment like?
• Restylane® is injected into the skin in tiny amounts
with a fine needle
• The gel gives natural volume and smooths wrinkles
• Treatment takes approximately 30 minutes with immediate
results and no pre-testing is needed
• You can resume normal activities immediately
• Restylane® takes effect after 2-3 days, with full effect
seen 7-10 days post treatment
What can Restylane® be used for?
• Restylane® is available in three variants which were
developed for specific purposes
• Restylane® for wrinkle correction and lip enhancements
• Restylane® Fine Lines for correcting thin, superficial
lines
• Restylane® Perlane for shaping facial contours, such
as the cheeks and chin, correcting deep folds and volume augmentation
of the lips
What can I expect from a Restylane® treatment?
• A healthy, vital appearance
• Long-lasting, but not permanent results
• Results can last up to 12 months, but it depends on individual
• Treatment can be continued or changed in combination with
other treatments
• Repeated as you wish
What are the potential side effects?
• The most common side effects are injection-related, such
as tenderness or bruising at the site of injection, or swelling
and redness
• They typically resolve within one or two days after injection
into the skin and within one week after injection into the lips
Chemical Peels
What are Chemical Peels?
• Chemical peels are a method of improving the tone and texture
of the skin
• Excessive pigmentation due to sun damage may also be improved
• Most commonly used chemicals are glycolic acid, used flor
lighter-style peels, and trichloracetic acid used for deeper peels
• Depth of peel required depends on the problem to be treated,
skin type and lifestyle
What are Chemical Peel treatments like?
• A solution of one or more exfoliating agents is applied
to the face to remove the rough upper layer of the skin and to stimulate
rejuvenation of new skin cells
• The deeper the peel, the longer the recovery
• After light peels you can resume normal activities immediately
• Medium and deep peels may result in swelling and blisters
and usually require 2 week recovery periods
• It is important to avoid the sun for three months following
treatment
• The result: tighter, smoother skin that is relatively free
of lines and blemishes
Micro Dermabrasion
What is Micro Dermabrasion?
• Micro Dermabrasion is a technique to resurface and smooth
the skin
• It is a deep cleansing, exfoliating technique using a handpiece
with embedded diamond chips and an adjustable vacuum
• It can assist in the treatment of many problems, including
acne and acne scarring, sun damage, hyperpigmentation, dry or oily
skin, dull skin, ‘smoker’s skin’, and blackheads
What is Micro Dermabrasion like?
• Most people enjoy the procedure which is done without any
requirement for anaesthesia
• After treatment the area will look flushed due to increased
circulation
• It subsides quickly and routine skincare can be commenced
immediately
Laser Skin Resurfacing
What is Laser Skin Resurfacing?
• Works in a similar way to peels, exfoliating the rough upper
layer of the skin
• Rather than chemicals, a beam of light is used to vaporise
unwanted tissue, leaving other areas of the skin untouched
• Allows for greater accuracy and skin imperfections are rapidly
treated one layer at a time, while underlying skin tissue is preserved
• Used to improve the skin that is sun-damaged, unevenly pigmented,
acne scarred and finely wrinkled
What is Laser Skin Resurfacing like?
• A local anaesthetic is required although lasers have a faster
recovery time than peels
• An initial redness that fades to light pink
• Within a few weeks this can be covered with cosmetics
• Discolouration usually disappears after 1 to 3 months
• In most cases only one treatment is required
• Complications following laser skin resurfacing are rare
What are Prescription Creams?
• Retinoids such as Tazorac® that can only be prescribed
by a physician
• Can reverse and prevent the skin’s signs of aging,
such as fine wrinkles, discoloration, and elasticity
• Exfoliates and regulates skin cell turnover that has slowed
with age
• Is applied daily or less often to achieve results
• Can be a great home treatment by itself but is also very
beneficial when used in conjunction with the many in-office procedures
we have covered today
What are Prescription Creams like?
• Some people may experience redness, dryness, and irritation
for the first few weeks
• This initial response subsides after 2-3 weeks once the
face has acclimatized to the treatment
• Results may be seen within a month but really noticeable
results are typically seen with longer use
